What’s the Gokyo No Waza?

The Gokyo No Waza is the syllabus of judo throws as laid down by the Kodokan, in Japan. There are five groups, with 40 throws; eight techniques in each group.

See all these techniques by clicking on the links above, or purchase the Koka Kids book: 40 Judo Throws.

IJF Guidelines on The Gokyo

The International Judo Federation have a fantastic video section of the Gokyo No Waza, and include throws that are banned in international completion.

See the IJF videos.

Although today, some throws are illegal under IJF guidelines, we also believe it is important to know all the throws in the Syllabus, partly because competitive rules constantly change and mainly because this knowledge will make you a more complete judoka.

Also techniques can be adapted.

For example, Kata-Guruma is now banned in International competition, as you can’t touch the trouser legs. But an adapted version, where judoka, use similarities in the movement of the original throw, but without touching the trouser leg is still very evident.
