Sumi-gaeshi – See how to do this throw

Sumi-gaeshi

Sumi-gaeshi is a sutemi-waza like Tomoe-Nage. The two throws are similar. The difference being the use of the foot. See the animation below:

How to Throw with Sumi-gaeshi

  1. First get uke moving. Pull uke towards you. Aim to get them to step forwards, over stepping their point of balance.
  2. As uke comes off balance, fall backwards quickly.
  3. Use the top of your foot against uke’s thigh. Steer uke over onto their back.
  4. Follow the movement, rounding your back as your roll backwards and slightly to the side.
