As a beginner in judo which books will help me with Technique?

That’s a great question, and good to see you are looking to improve your judo In judo you can improve your tachi-waza technique (standing) and newaza technique (groundwork). For complete novices we recommend « Learn Breakfalls » which also has great agility movements and also « Ten Hold Downs » – these are appropriate for white, red and yellow belt judoka.

Here is a list of the Top Ten Judo Books for Technique that might come in handy for beginners looking to learn more about judo.

Can I learn judo by myself?

You can certainly improve your judo by studying judo books at home, and doing some shadow judo, use uchikomi bands to practice your technique however we here at Koka Kids recommend the best way to learn judo is to join an affiliated club, with a qualified instructor. This is especially important if you are completely new to judo and just starting off.

For reminder of how to do the throws, as well as the judo books, Koka Kids has a great online resource with each technique in the Judo Gokyo animated.

« Every new member gets a copy of the book and I use it a lot during training and always tell the kids to look at it at home. »

In this post, I’d like to focus on a judo coach who created his own Koka Kids book: Jörg Bischoff. You can read the full interview here.

Sensei Jörg and Iris Bischoff direct the Sportschule Bischof, in Germany with 200 students and are constantly on the look out for ways to improve their dojo.

Jorg and Iris Bischoff with Koka Kids Book

Jörg got in touch with me with the idea of creating a book specifically for his club. Could it contain techniques that they taught at their dojo ? Could it be in German?

And so the idea began. A few months later, and between us Jörg and I, had produced “Lerne Judo”, a one-hundred page book for Sportschule Bischof.

Recently, I got back in touch with Jörg to catch up and ask him a few questions about how he is developing judo at his club using Koka Kids materials. Here are his answers. I hope they trigger ideas and inspiration for your own dojo.

The full Interview with Sensei Jörg Bischoff, Sportschule Bischoff, Germany is on the Koka Kids Substack (open to read).

Judo Activity Sheets

Fun stuff to print out for judoka to do at home.

Get the Judo Activity Sheets and help kids learn more about judo. Here are three judo activities you might like to try out at your dojo this week: download the print-outs here.

Judo Activity Sheet by Koka Kids HONOUR

1. The Moral Code – Honour

The first judo activity sheet gets our judoka thinking about the judo moral code, and in particular the meaning of : “Honour.” Here is a good article by the IJF on Honour.

You could use the sheet to provoke a discussion

  1. What does the word HONOUR mean to them?
  2. Can they think of examples when they’ve acted with honour in the dojo?
  3. Is there a role model you can talk about, and an example of how this person acted with honour?

Or allow them to take it home and complete it in their own time

  1. They can colour in the Japanese Kanji
  2. In their own words, they can take time to write down what Honour means to them.

Keep the kids coming back to the tatami week after week. Here’s how.

2. Five Japanese Judo Words

Next up, let’s test those brain cells, and brush up on some Japanese judo terminology.

You could print these work sheets up, and leave them on a dojo table for anyone who would like some judo homework.

  1. Check back in a week and see the answers.
  2. Use these Japanese words as you teach and see who has grasped the meaning.

Instead of printing, you could send to your membership by email for parents to print out and give to their children.

  1. If the judoka (or parents!!!!) need help then you can point them towards this free online book which has all the answers: Learn Japanese Judo Words

3. Colour a Throw

Last up, a black and white print-out that your youngest judoka can bring to life with colour.

You could organise a colouring competition

  1. Put the entries up on a wall for all to see
  2. Give a small prize to those who make an effort
