TURNOVER OVER INTO KESA-GATAME – Essential Judo Skill for Yellow Belt

Yellow belt turnover

LEARNING TO TURN AND HOLD WITH KESA-GATAME is a skill suitable for Yellow Belt students and is required by British Judo Association for grading to 5th Mon or 5th Kyu level. Being able to turn your partner over from all fours is essential if you are going to hold them down and win the contest. A common difficulty is when your partner is all fours they tighten up and you can’t get your hands in for the turnover. Get around this by speeding up your hands. Before your partner has time to defend make sure you have slipped one hand and arm right underneath their body. Practice this until it becomes fast and instinctive and you’ll be turning everyone over with ease.
