Judo Syllabus now in paperback!

By Nik Fairbrother, 8th Dan, Koka Kids editor.

I wanted to share something I’ve been working on for the past year that’s brought back some lovely memories. Earlier this year, British Judo and Koka Kids launched the digital version of the British Judo Mon and Kyu Grade Syllabus, and I’m happy to say the paperback version is now available too!

Now judoka can opt for either paperback or digital versions.

Paperback: The full syllabus is covered over 6 books for Mon grades (1st to 18th Mon) and another 6 books for Kyu Grade (Novice to 1st Kyu) and can be purchased on amazon:

British Judo Kyu Grade Syllabus – paperback editions

Digital: Each book is also available to British Judo members as an interactive, digital version through the British Judo website:

Working on this project took me back to my own grading days – I particularly remember getting my orange belt, which at Pinewood as quite something.

Then, our only reference material was an old black and white poster hanging on the dojo wall!

I like to think we’ve come a long way since those days. The digital version is fully interactive – you can click on techniques to see them in motion, test yourself with quiz questions, and guess the English meanings of Japanese terms. But if you prefer something tangible, the print books let you hold the knowledge in your hands, study the pictures, and read the instructions at your own pace.

Both versions contain everything needed to grade up and meet the official requirements of the British Judo Association, with technical direction from Colin McIver (9th Dan) and Joyce Heron (7th Dan).

Whether you’re teaching or learning, digital or print – there’s now a resource that makes the journey a bit clearer than that old poster on my dojo wall!
