Bexley Judokwai include Koka Kids in their annual fee

September 07 - We are delighted to hear that Bexley Judokwai have included Koka Kids into their annual fee - meaning all members will get a copy of the magazine each term.

Bexley judoka now train in a fantastic new dojo - just take a look at the photos at http://www.picturetrail.com/diabolos

Bexley coach Louise Dunsford said "After moving to our fantastic new facilities at The Dojo Sidcup, based in Sidcup Rugby Club, we decided to get everyone on board and pay an annual membership fee. We wanted to include something within our membership, so that members weren't just paying for the privilege of being Bexley Judokwai members! Therefore, we decided to include in our annual fee, free subscription to the Koka Kids magazine for that period. For us this meant we knew exactly how many Koka Kids magazines to order and we knew that all our junior members were receiving regular information on judo, on what was happening in this country and abroad. Everyone was happy! Would definitely recommend to other clubs to include their Koka Kids subscription into their members membership fee."

Sherwood Primary School Years 3 & 4 Team Judo Event

July 07 - Sherwood Primary School Years 3 & 4 Team Judo Event
Report by Coach Vic Court On Wednesday 11 July

Sherwood School Junior Hall became a Judo competition arena. All the boys and girls of years 3 & 4 had four weeks judo training with Bushido Coach Vic Court as part of a sports initiative during PPA time, in which the children took to the Olympic Sport like ducks to water.

The pupils were getting exercise and fun whilst leaning a sport that requires discipline, respect and self-control. It was evident from the very beginning that the children were loving it and they were informed that eleven pupils from each class (five girls and six boys) would be chosen to represent their class in a team event on week five.

Fighting Films kindly sponsored the event by supplying twenty Judo kits for the event. The children chose their names for their teams - The Crushers, Bushido Bashers and The Bonebreakers. There was a fantastic buzz in the school hall as the teams warmed up and prepared for the commencing battles that lie ahead.

Children were still learning about the refereeing terms and scores as the event progressed. Teachers, classroom assistants and those remaining from each class were screaming and shouting in appreciation of their teams efforts. The whole event was a great success as all competitors had a great time.

The Crushers were crowned champions after defeating the Bushido Bashers 6 wins to 5 in the final. Each and every child fought determinedly with great spirit in a fantastic atmosphere and the whole of Year three and four should be applauded for their sporting effort, achievement and behaviour.

It is certainly hoped that many may pursue the sport further at the Bushido Sherwood Judo Club that runs on Fridays during term time. The club holds two sessions and pupils from other local schools are most welcome.
3.30 - 4.15 School Years R - Year 2
4.15 - 5.15 School Years 3 - 8

Koka Kids is the official magazine of the USJA

March 07 - Koka Kids has become the official magazine of the United States Judo Association, with US residents now able to buy the magazine by contacting the USJA. Every new member who joins the USJA over the next six months will receive a free copy of Koka Kids.

Gary Goltz (head instructor of Goltz Judo and Chief Operating Officer of the USJA) says “Every parent wants two things for their child; good health and a good education. Along with physical conditioning, judo has always offered the opportunity to develop discipline and friendships. Now, joined with Koka Kids magazine, the USJA is helping to promote reading as well. The magazine was a natural fit with the USJA with its emphasis on grass roots judo and family participation. Even reluctant readers are attracted by the articles on subjects that weigh on many junior (and senior) players. Each issue, Editor Nicola Fairbrother, herself a world judo champion, gets both junior readers of the magazine and international athletes take on such topics as belt promotions, pre-tournament jitters, favorite techniques and their favorite judo stories”.

USJA Junior Development Chair, Serge Boussyou of Rhode Island proposed the magazine adoption. “My philosophy has always been that kids in judo are kids first. We passed them out in some of our USJA clubs and at the end of practice; the kids have their nose in the magazine, reading them as they walk out to the car. The parents love it. What kid wouldn’t like the recognition of being featured in an international magazine? Our kids from Rhode Island, New York and California will be read about by people around the world. How cool is that? For those parents who don’t know a lot about judo, just that it is something their kid wants to do, it gives a lot of good basic information.”
